Blumenthal opens AI hearing with a deepfake recording of his own voice During the Senate hearing on AI this week, Senator Richard Blumenthal used an AI generated recording to make some opening remarks. The hearing also featured testimony from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who expressed his fear of the potential nefarious uses of AI.

  • Why it matters: As AI advances and becomes more readily available and integrated into society, government will likely struggle to adopt proactive policies and regulations for the emerging technology. 

Elon Musk says NBCU ad chief Linda Yaccarino will be new Twitter CEO. Elon Musk is stepping down as CEO of Twitter, and will be replaced by NBCUniversal ad executive Linda Yaccarino. Musk will continue working at Twitter, focusing on product design and emerging technology.

Europe greenlights Microsoft’s $68.7B Activision acquisition. The acquisition received tentative approval by the European Commission. 

  • Why it Matters: The biggest concerns with the acquisition are that Microsoft, which owns Xbox, would not distribute Activision games to competing platforms like PlayStation. Another concern is that the company would have a monopoly on cloud gaming if Activision games were exclusive to Game Pass.


Stat of the Week - AI in the Workplace

While many worry about AI eventually taking their jobs, others may need to be concerned about AI integration and supervision in the office.

New data from Pew Research shows that adults in the U.S. generally disapprove of AI being used to monitor and analyze the performance and activities of employees at work.

  • 71% oppose AI making hiring decisions

  • 61% oppose AI tracking employee

  • 51% oppose AI keeping tabs on activity on employee computers

AI is literally everywhere, and there is no escaping it. From digital assistants like Siri and Alexa, to robots that help doctors perform important surgeries. We found some pretty unique, real world applications of AI technology that we had no clue about.

One Fun Thing - AI Memes

I played around with Supermeme.ai to generate a series of memes by using the prompt “AI Taking my Marketing Job”. It generated about 6 memes that I could then edit. The text on the top and image was generated, but I edited the bottom for a sharper punchline.
